Week 2 : Lecture
This week, we were discussing on the topic of introduction to basic composition. We were taught about the utilization of focal points, scale & hierarchy, balance the elements and white spaces in making a good composition. The main points from the lecture is about rule of thirds, golden ratio and framing & cropping.

Fig 1: Rule of Thirds

Basically, rule of thirds is dividing the images into thirds with 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. The intersections of the lines are the focal points or points where the eyes will naturally land on. This means that positioning the subjects on the points would make the composition more pleasant on the eyes.

Fig 2: Golden Ratio

Golden ratio is using the Fibonacci spiral as a guideline to the composition. The spiral would add a sense of harmony and perfect proportion to the composition which is often applied to most designs.

Fig 3: Framing

Framing & cropping is positioning the subjects in a frame. For example the above picture where the plane is being framed by the building from a persons point of view.

Practical
After having the discussion on the above topic, we were tasked to create a collage from cutouts of magazines. 3 compositions of the collage should be presented. Pasted below are my compositions for this task.

Fig 4: Pre-composition #1

First of all, all of the compositions I made are random. This current composition is basically like a “book” or labelled diagram concept. There’s a title and description, labels and framing on the subject at the center.

Fig 5: Pre-composition #2

This second composition is more of balance or symmetry. The top left corner is almost mirrored at the bottom right corner as well as the top right corner with the bottom left corner. The whole composition is basically “mirrored” diagonally. I also added the red dressing table for a pop of color. Adding the black bar on the person's eyes also made it more interesting in my opinion cause it gives a sense of mystery.

Fig 6: Pre-composition #3

This last composition is more on framing or squaring up the composition. This is more of me just randomly arranging stuff together making it look enclosed. In my opinion, this is my least liked composition compared to the other two.

Feedback
"Great series of collage Thaqif! I would like to vote the COMPOSITION #1 as the final one to be glue.
Good job!"

Week 3 : Lecture
This week, we were discussing on the common tools used in photoshop which are the lasso tool, pen tool and the concept of layering. The lasso tool allows users to draw and pinpoint specific areas of the document. The lasso tool has 3 different options, lasso, polygonal lasso and magnetic lasso. The next tool is the pen tool which allows users to create paths from scratch. The pen tool adds points that can be dragged allowing manipulation of the line. The lesser the path, the smoother it is. Lastly, we learnt about layering where picture or objects are layered on top of each other to create depth in perspective. Each layer can also be manipulated with filters.

Practical
For practical we were tasked to create 3 digital collages from the images provided in the google drive. Here are the 3 collages that I have created.

Fig 1: Composition 1

This is the first composition which is more of a minimal composition and not too complicated. This composition has a sense of balance in my opinion.

Fig 2: Composition 2

This is the second composition which is a little bit more complicated with the layering of objects within each other. This for me creates depth and intricacy within the composition making it look more interesting.

Fig 3: Composition 3

This is the third composition which is the simplest one compared to the other two. Honestly this is when I ran out of ideas and I wanted to go for a more simplistic approach.

Week 4 : Lecture
This week, we were discussing on adjustment layer and filters. Adjustment layers are non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to the images without actually permanently changing or alter the images. With these layers, editing and reverting to the original image image can be done at anytime.

Basic adjustments:

Brightness/contrast
- Adjusting the highlights and shadows

Level
Adjusting the levels of shadows, midtones and highlights

Curves
- Adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of the image

Exposure
Adjusting the exposure, offset and gamma

Selective Color
Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors

Filters are able to change the colour, add blur or create a completely new image effect.

Practical
For practical, we were tasked to refine our composition from week 3. Attached below is the original image before any adjustments are made.

This is the composition that has been suggested to be used by Sir Fauzi. I don’t know why but I actually struggled to make a composition that I liked for the digital collage, maybe because we had to only use certain images. I think it was difficult for me because I was more focused on combining the images by cutting them up (Frankenstein action) rather than creating a good composition by layering. Either way, this is the composition that was chosen to be refined.

Fig 1: Original Composition

This is the refined composition, I scaled the car and the factory down and put it to the right side instead of the middle. It feels like it took too much space in the original one, and I feel like this adds more space and flow to the composition. Also I added a strip of the textured circle to balance out the heaviness on the right side. Most of the adjustments to the images are vibrance, photo filters, brightness/contrast and hue/saturations. I’ve also added a white border as I feel like it was lacking brightness/white.

Fig 2: Refined Composition

Shown below are some of the adjustments that I've used for the refined composition.
